James R. Balkcom, Jr.
Jim has considerable expertise in management assessment, development, mentorship and in creating and leading high-performance boards of directors. From 1976 to 1994, Jim was CEO and principal shareholder of Techsonic Industries, Inc., a privately held leading global marine electronics company that innovated a number of product categories in marine electronics with well-known brands such as Humminbird™ (e.g., FishFinder and DepthFinder). From the time he became CEO until he left the company, sales grew from under $1 million to over $120 million in annual revenue, creating over $100 million of shareholder value.
He has served on 16 boards of directors. Past Council Capital portfolio company board roles include non-executive Chairman of iKobo and Executive Chairman of EVault. Current Council Capital portfolio company board roles include Chairman of EndoChoice and lead director of REACH Health. He also serves as Chairman of TalentQuest. From 1998 to 2002, Jim was Chairman of CommerceSouth, a publicly traded bank holding company. From 1996 to 2000, he served as Director and then Executive Chairman at PAMECO Corp. He serves as lead director of the independent director’s committee of State Bank and Trust.
Jim received his BS from West Point and served as a Captain in the United States Army. He received his MBA from Harvard Business School.
