Wayne T. Smith
Wayne has served as President and CEO of Community Health Systems, Inc. (CHS) (NYSE: CYH) since 1997 and was named Chairman of the Board in February 2001. During his tenure at CHS, net revenues have grown from $742 million to $13 billion. Prior to joining CHS, he was with Humana, Inc. for 23 years, where he held a variety of senior management positions including President and COO. He also was a member of Humana’s Board of Directors. He currently serves on the boards of Praxair, Inc., the Nashville Healthcare Council (2006 & 2007 Chairman) and the Federation of American Hospitals (2003 Chairman). Before joining Humana in 1973, he spent four years as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Services Corps. Wayne holds both a BS and MS from Auburn University and an MS in healthcare administration from Trinity University. He studied at the King's Fund College of Hospital Administration in London, England.
